Students have told me in their SPOT comments that the grading system I use can be confusing, so I want to dedicate some time to explaining more about it with these FAQs.

Why do you use a labor-based system?

Worker, wearing hard hat, at a computerI believe that a system that allows you to keep working until you get the results that fit the workplace is more humane than a system that punishes you if you aren’t perfect on the first try.

I know there are lots of situations in the workplace that require perfection. If you submit a bid to a client that has errors, for instance, you may not get a second chance—but that’s in the workplace. You are still in the classroom.

The labor-based system allows you the chance to learn and improve. You can make mistakes and try again. You can take risks, and if they don’t turn out, your grade will still be okay.

How does this system relate to the workplace?

Drawing of a building in the background, with a briefcase in the foregroundI have worked in quite a few places, and in none of them did I ever receive a letter grade for the work that I did. Never ever. It just doesn’t work that way.

Sure my writing was read by others I worked with. Sometimes it was good enough to go out to the intended reader right away. Other times it had to be revised first. Grades just weren’t part of the system.

In the workplace, you are assessed on how hard you work and what you accomplish. Managers expect you to show up, put in your best effort, and accomplish the goals your company sets. If you do nothing or the bare minimum, you will be reprimanded or fired.

Grades in this course are based on a similar system. You earn your grade based on your labor—on the time and intensity that you put into your writing and collaboration. You are not punished for making mistakes as long as you work to improve throughout the term.

What’s the research behind this system?

Why is this system better for students?

Bar graph showing upward trendThe most important benefits of this system are explained in the When Your Grades Are Based on Labor infographic. To summarize those benefits, a labor-based grading system allows you to

  1. Focus on Ideas (Not Mistakes).
  2. Write for Yourself (Not for Me).
  3. Take Risks (Don’t Play It Safe).
  4. Have Do-Overs (No Penalty).

This labor-based system allows you to continue working on your projects until your work reaches the level that would be acceptable in the workplace. Your grade is not effected by what you haven’t learned yet, and you are free to try out ideas as you like.

Why is there no partial credit?

Icon for a text file with binary code as the contentWork in this class is either ready to use in the workplace (and graded Complete) or it’s not ready (and graded Incomplete).

Think of it as a binary system. There can only be 1 or 0, Complete or Incomplete. There isn’t any middle ground, so there isn’t partial credit.

The thing to remember is that when a project is returned as Incomplete, you can always revise it until you do have a piece that is ready to use in the workplace. There is no punishment in the system if your work isn’t quite ready, but there’s no credit either.

How are labor logs part of this system?

Journal notebookYou document the time you spend on activities and the level of intensity you put into your work in your labor log. You can think of tracking your work in your log as a parallel to tracking billing codes for what you do in the workplace.

I have no way of knowing what you are working on or even how much you are working in an online class. In a face-to-face classroom, I would see you working in the classroom. I could tell if you were working intensely, working at an average pace, or not working at all. Since I cannot see your work myself, I need you to tell me what you’re doing.

Additionally, you will use your labor log to gather details about your work when you write your final exam. Keeping track of what you do in your log is easier than trying to remember the details of what you did at the end of the term.

Why is there so much emphasis on peer feedback in this system?

The peer feedback activities in our class give you the chance to learn more about that process. Writing in the workplace is as much about what you write as it is about how you help others with their writing.

Just as importantly, peer feedback helps you improve your own writing in two ways. First, and maybe most obvious, you get advice on your draft that you can use to revise your document. Second, by reading drafts written by your classmates you can see strategies that will help you improve your own work as well as notice errors that you can later check your own work for.

Naturally, you cannot copy other people’s work; however, you can see useful ideas that you can make your own. For instance, you might read a draft that does a great job with headings. When you return to your own draft, those headings will stick with you, and you can use their example as you revise your own draft.

Our #WeekendWatch focuses on revision strategies that strengthen your writing. Strong verbs can improve everything you write. They are particularly helpful in your job application documents, where strong verbs show off your capabilities.

The ideas in today’s video can apply to your Analysis project. In some of the columns of your table, you will most likely use fragments. Here’s an example for the kinds of writing I do, for instance:

  • Outlines the policies for the course.

The verbs in the Description column (in bold) strengthen the document. Just as a reminder: Your tables should include more information than just description.

Today’s infographic focuses on Business Etiquette Around the World. The image outlines how people introduce themselves in the workplace, how business meetings work, and how people interact when dining with coworkers or (potential) clients.

You can include information about intercultural and global influences on the different kinds of writing that you include in your Analysis Table project, so today’s infographic should help you begin thinking about how writing and communication may change depending upon where your audience lives or what they cultural background is.

I’m not convinced that everything in the infographic is 100% accurate. For instance, it seems like a stereotype to think that everyone has to do a solo karaoke performance after dinner in South Korea. Does anyone know?

As you look at the infographic, you can respond to what you see here, following any of these ideas (or an idea of your own):

  • Can you provide details that confirm or challenge claims in the infographic?
  • Can you add information for a country—either something that is missing or a country that isn’t listed?
  • Is there anything that surprises you? anything that you might need help adapting to?
  • Can you share an experience where you did (or didn’t) follow intercultural expectations?
  • Can you tell us more about any of the practices listed here (such as the significance of a practice or why things are done in a particular way in a culture)?

Many of you have probably already seen the XKCD comic below, titled “University Website.” Beyond being a funny reflection on what you see on college websites, it’s a great example of what goes wrong when composers fail to think about what their audience needs. The people who decide what goes on these websites are meeting someone’s goals, but not all of the people who go to the site for information. I haven’t compared all the items in the comic to the Virginia Tech website, but I suspect that a lot of the details are quite true.

You can participate today in two ways: adding a comment that analyzes a university webpage, OR replying to someone else’s comment and explaining why you agree (or disagree) with their analysis. The details on the two options are below:

Option 1. Add a Comment Analyzing a Webpage

Our activity this week is to complete a similar analysis of another webpage. Find a page on the Virginia Tech website, and compare what shows on that page to what you would look for when you go to that page. I have some guidelines for you:

  • Choose a page that is in the vt.edu domain. You can look at a page for your major, a course, resources you use on campus, and so forth.
  • OR choose a page that is clearly related to Virginia Tech, such as a page for a club, Greek organization, and so forth. If you’re not sure, send me the link and ask me.
  • You may NOT use any page that I have written or that is about me. That just gets weird and awkward.

Once you choose a page, do this:

  • Tell us the name of the page (for instance, English Dept homepage).
  • Share the link in your comment.
  • Talk about what you see there.
  • Talk about what you think people would go there for.
  • Draw some conclusions about how well the page meets the needs of its audience.

Finally, you are just making a comment. You’re not trying to write a formal comparison-contrast essay. Use short lists or fragments, whatever will make sense to people who read your comment.

Option 2. Reply and Discuss Someone Else’s Analysis

You can reply to a comment someone else has made (or even several people if you want). Your goal would be to think about whether you agree with that commenter’s analysis and explain the reasons for your response.

Feedback on Your 1/26 Labor Logs

In this post, I want to discuss the timing of the grading and to provide some feedback on some patterns that I noticed as I read through your logs.

When I Grade Logs

I usually wait to grade your logs until after the end of the grace period, so don’t worry if you haven’t seen a grade. It’s easier in Canvas to grade the logs all at once.

Overall Feedback for the Class

  • Check your time: Virginia Tech classes require 36.25 hours of class time for the semester (about 2.5 hours a week), plus time to complete your readings and compose your projects. Out-of-class time usually ranges from 2 to 3 hours a week. If you are averaging fewer than 4 hours a week, you need to up your game! You’re not putting in the amount of work that the course requires.
  • Include details: Remember that you will use your logs at the end of the term, when you are working on your final exam. If you put in a little effort now to require concrete details about your work in the course, you will have exactly what you need when it comes time to write your final.
  • Focus on document design: I said this in the post on the 1/19 logs, but it bears repeating. Be sure that you pay attention to document design. Using headings and chunking your text will make it easier for you to find information in your logs later in the term, when you are working on your final exam. I’m sure that you all know what the word parallel means. You probably encountered it in a geometry course a long time ago. Remember the parallelogram?

You have probably seen the concept in courses here at Tech. Consider these examples:

  • A mechanical engineering major is likely to be aware of parallelism control and parallelism tolerance.
  • A building construction major knows that various parts of a building need to be parallel. (Imagine how annoying a staircase would be if the steps weren’t parallel.)
  • A computer science or computer engineering major knows all about parallel processing.
  • A finance major would be familiar with parallel portfolio optimization, parallel loans, and parallel markets.
  • A business major may know about organizational parallelism, including parallel leadership and parallel learning.

In all these examples, parallel generally means that two or more things match in some way. That is essentially what parallelism means in a writing course as well. When you are composing your Analysis table, choose parallel phrasing for the information in each column. For example, you might start everything in the purpose column with infinitive verbs (verb phrases that start with “to,” such as to explain or to provide).

At 4m50s into the video, the video discusses parallelism in bullet lists, outlines, and headings. That section of the video is closest to the kind of parallelism you will use for the columns of your Analysis table.

Focus on Writing in Your Field

This is the post for the week of February 5, 2018.

This week, you will turn in your Professional Bio project and move on to the second major project, which asks you to consider the kinds of writing that people in your field do.

This week there is a lot of prep work to do—primarily reading the pieces that will help you complete the different columns in your table. You will also need to conduct some research on writing in your field.

Readings for the Week

Tasks for the Week

  1. By 11:59PM on Monday, February 5, submit your Professional Bio Statement in Canvas. The grace period ends at 11:59 PM on Thursday, February 8.
  2. Read the Analysis assignment. You will create a table of the kinds of writing in your field. The project is due on Monday, February 26. The grace period for the project ends on Thursday, March 1.
  3. Ask any questions you have about the Analysis project in the Analysis of Writing in your Field Questions.  If you have any questions, check there first to see if they have already been answered. If they have not, post your question there, and I will answer when I check in. Asking a question is not required.
  4. Compose your Analysis project in Microsoft Word. Google Docs and Excel will not allow you to format the contents within the table cells in the same way.
  5. Begin work on the Analysis assignment. Use the suggestions in Step 3 of the Analysis assignment (Research writing in your field) to begin work on your project. Your research can include looking at business writing and/or technical writing textbooks, thinking about things you have written during internships and other related jobs, and interviewing people in the field or professors who can tell you about writing in your field.
  6. Read the relevant information that will help you with specific parts of your project:
    1. Find info to help with the Audience column in your project in Audience Analysis: Primary, Secondary, and Hidden Audiences (from Writing Commons). The missing image for Table 1 is available at http://writingcommons.org/images/Audience_Analysis.JPG. For additional information on audience, read the Chapter 2 of Technical Writing: Audience Analysis.
    2. Find info on ethics. If you are focusing on ethics in your table, check out Ethics in Technical Writing, Chapter 9 (9.1–9.6) of Technical Writing, OR Business Ethics and Social Responsibility, Chapter 2 (2.1–2.8) of Exploring Business. For either chapter, you need to click through to access all the sections of the chapter.
    3. Find info on intercultural and global issues. If you are focusing on intercultural and global issues in your table, check out Practicing Intercultural Communication from Writing Commons. The Worldwide Cellphone Etiquette Infographic demonstrates all the intercultural considerations that can go into something as simple as a business phone call. For additional information on intercultural and global issues, read Chapter 18 of Business Communication for Success: Intercultural and International Business Communication and/or “Appreciating Different Cultures” from Wikibooks.
    4. Check any of the textbooks on the syllabus for information on the specific kinds of writing you will include in your table. The textbooks can especially help with describing the characteristics of kinds of writing.
  7. By 11:59PM on Friday, February 9, write your 02/09 Labor Log in Canvas. Specific questions for your log are included in Canvas. The grace period for your log entry ends at 11:59 PM on Monday, February12.

Today’s #WeekendWatch video discusses how including clear headings, subheadings, and links helps readers navigate your document by providing information-rich signposts. Listen for a reference in the video to the F-shaped reading pattern, which these document features support.

The video refers to online documents specifically, but most of these features are useful in printed documents as well. Obviously links are not very helpful in printed work. Headings and subheadings certainly are.

They scan across the top of the page and then down the left side of the page until they find another significant word or phrase that catches their attention. At that point, they scan across the page a bit and then resume scanning down the page a bit. People rarely read everything on the page. They scan and decide in a matter of seconds what action to take next. They may never scroll down the page.

If you are writing documents that people will read online—whether email messages, attached files, or webpages—you need to use document design elements that will put your most important information in the path of the F-shape pattern.

As you consider this study, think about the design strategies that would help readers find the significant information in your messages, and share your ideas in the comments.
